La Michelle

    Vendor Biography

Michelle Popalzai is a social entrepreneur, designer, and mentor from Kabul, Afghanistan. Her journey began at the age of 16 while she was still in high school, when she took her first job with a modest salary as the first step toward achieving financial independence. Driven by a vision to create meaningful change in her community, she transformed that early experience into a lifelong commitment to entrepreneurship and social impact.

Her dedication to excellence was evident from an early age. In 2015, she earned a Gold Medal in the National Science Olympiad, competing among students from schools across Afghanistan. Michelle is currently pursuing her Business Management studies online through the American University of Afghanistan while also having completed business studies at Cornell University, further strengthening her entrepreneurial and leadership foundation.

Her achievements have earned her recognition as one of the Influential Faces of 2022 and the Youngest Entrepreneur of the Year in the startup category. She has also been recognized as a nominee and finalist for the 100 Education Ambassadors initiative.

Michelle is the founder of La Michelle, a luxury fashion brand that has become known for blending traditional Afghan craftsmanship with contemporary design. What began with exclusive custom-made pieces evolved into a premium leather bag collection that has reached international markets and received positive reviews from customers around the world. Built through personal determination, self-funding, and the support of her family, La Michelle has become more than a fashion brand—it is a platform for social impact.

Through the brand, Michelle has created employment opportunities for more than 250 Afghan women and girls facing financial hardship, helping them develop sustainable sources of income. In addition, 5% of every purchase is dedicated to supporting people in need through charitable initiatives. Beyond her business, she has collaborated with international influencers and launched fundraising campaigns to assist vulnerable children who serve as breadwinners for their families.

Determined to expand educational opportunities for girls, Michelle founded Khama, a women-led NGO and homeschooling network that provides education to more than 60 girls who have been denied access to formal schooling. Through both online and in-person classes, she introduced an internationally informed curriculum covering digital graphic design, sales and business development, entrepreneurship, and a hands-on robotics project. Many of her students have gone on to launch their own online shops and small businesses, creating new pathways toward financial independence.

Continuing her mission to empower future entrepreneurs, Michelle recently established the Founders Club, where she serves as a business coach and mentor, equipping aspiring founders with practical skills, guidance, and the confidence to build sustainable businesses and become leaders in their communities.
