My name is Somaya Solimankhil. I am an Afghan artist, calligrapher, and founder of Naiko Cultural and Artistic Institution, based in Herat, Afghanistan.
I studied law and art with a focus on miniature painting and have received training from experienced Afghan masters in calligraphy, illumination (Tazhib), and traditional arts. I have also been teaching traditional arts since 2021.
Naiko began its activities to create a space where Afghan women can learn, practice, preserve, and earn an income through traditional arts and handicrafts. Our work officially developed as an institution in 2023.
Our products include Afghan miniature paintings, calligraphy, Tazhib, embroidery, traditional decorative arts, woodwork, ceramics, carpets, jewelry, leatherwork, and other handmade products created by Afghan artists and artisans.
Today, Naiko works with a team of 6 permanent staff members and around 170 active women and men artists and artisans. We support artists in developing their skills, producing quality handmade products, and connecting their work with local and international customers.
Our goal is to preserve Afghanistan’s rich artistic heritage while creating sustainable opportunities, income, and visibility for Afghan women artists and artisans.
